meet the growers

The estate’s management includes Sanka and Nalani, who oversee daily operations and ensure the highest standards of tea production. The estate employs around 30 people, including the skilled tea maker Neethanjana Senadheera Tharuka, who plays a crucial role in maintaining the estate’s reputation for quality and creativity.

the estate

Spanning just 25 acres, Amba Estate is located in Ambadandegama, Sri Lanka, at an altitude of 3,280 feet (1,000 meters). The estate benefits from a mild climate with ample rainfall, ideal for tea cultivation. The soil is rich and well-draining, supporting the healthy growth of tea plants. Weather at Amba Estate is consistent year-round, with distinct dry and wet seasons.

organic practices

The estate is renowned for its dedication to organic farming practices, although it remains uncertified. This commitment includes the use of their own compost and organic sprays, strict avoidance of chemicals, and manual weeding.

sustainability

Amba Estate employs sustainable farming techniques such as composting and planting nitrogen-fixing plants among the tea bushes. Additionally, Amba cultivates various crops like black pepper, lemongrass, cinnamon, and clove, enhancing biodiversity and providing alternative income sources.

ethical practices

Amba Tea Estate goes beyond just tea production by actively supporting its employees and the community. Workers are involved in every stage of tea making and benefit from profit-sharing schemes, earning 10% of the estate’s revenues. This empowerment extends to the creation of the Ambadandegama Chutney Cooperative, where retired tea pickers produce chutneys and other preserves, further supplementing their incomes.
